Who are the good guys?

I watched the first episode of the new TV series the Kill Point last night. It was entertaining and looks like it will be an interesting mini series. The plot centres around some ex soldiers who rob a bank, and who get trapped there before they can escape.

Towards the end of the episode, the leader of the soldiers who calls himself 'Mr Wolf' comes out of the bank to meet with the Police Negotiator. As they talk, Mr Wolf suddenly decides to address the crowd, showing them his scars from his many battle wounds. He declares boldly that he loves his country and that soldiers should be supported better and then the crowd cheers. The thing I found strange about this is that he and his men had killed one police oficer, seriously wounded an FBI agent and they were still holding hostages and despite this, the crowd cheers for him.

Many years ago, things were simpler, you had the good and the bad guys and you knew where you stood, but nowadays many popular TV shows want to downplay the significance of 'good' and 'evil'. In both 'Lost' and 'Heroes', some of the most heroic acts of 'good' are carried out by people who have consistently  been evil up until that point and who then revert to evil actions afterwards. Have we in Western Society lost the sense of what is morally right and wrong?

I do believe in peoples ability to change and it is interesting that the creators of '24' released a one off episode called '24 Redemption' after season 6 which drew a lot of criticism for glorifying torture. There was clearly a feeling that Jack needed to be seen to redeem himself in some way and in the course of the episode, we do see a much more human side to him.

It will be interesting to see how the Kill Point pans out and in particular if the sense of moral ambiguity continues throughout the series. At some point we need to come back to the place where we acknowledge that some things are wrong, but at the same time, we should never write people off as being permanently bad. We all have the capacity to do good and to change  for the better. Forgiveness and the ability to be transformed into a better person is right at the heart of the Christian faith. Howver, before we can receive forgiveness and transformation, we must acknowledege that we have done things that are wrong. God will always accept us!!
